For more than 800 years, the Holy Roman Empire shaped the destiny of much of Europe, spanning linguistic, religious, and cultural boundaries. Its most powerful symbol was the Imperial Crown. The turbulent history of this contested yet iconic emblem of authority is steeped in myth, much like European history itself.
Directed by Klaus T. Steindl, the documentary The Imperial Crown: Myth, Mystery, and Symbol of Power follows an international, interdisciplinary team of researchers led by the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna as they investigate this extraordinary symbol of the Holy Roman Empire. Using cutting-edge imaging technology, the team uncovers previously unknown details, offering new insights into one of Europe’s most significant historical artifacts.
